I was first introduced to this egg yolk when I was traveling in Taiwan last year. It wasn’t love at first sight but somehow it drew my attention and when I heard about Gudetama Dim Sum Restaurant in HKG, I knew I had to include this into my food itinerary! I am so glad I did for this egg yolk is sooooo cute and irresistible! Don’t ask me why for I think Japanese is really clever in creating these cute icons, just look at Hello Kitty. If you haven’t followed me on Instagram, come by @modgam and I’ll be sure to charm you with all the HKG food delicacies!
Located inside The ONE shopping mall at Tsim Sha Tsui Kowloon, it is hard to miss this bright cheery restaurant filled with Gudetama posters. Seeing the menu itself brings smile to my face for everything is sooooo Gudetama! Siew Mai, Har Gow, Po-lo buns and more. I recommend you coming slightly earlier before lunch so as to avoid the crazy lunch queue.
Gudetama deep fried steamed bun in condensed milk sauce Hkd39 = S$7.25
The skin was a little tough but the sweet condensed milk paired with the biscuit is rather tasty.
Gudetama prawn dumplings Hkd49 = S$9.10
Surprisingly this har-gow tasted really yummy and to think we have the perception that themed cafes like this don’t serve good food. Most of the Gudetama dishes we tasted are rather delicious.
Gudetama pineapple bun with angus beef Hkd39 = S$7.25
Love the crispy sweet po-lou pineapple bun for its so HKG local delicacy paired with modern western angus beef.
Gudetama chocolate custard bun Hkd49 = S$9.10
Because the egg yolk vomiting buns are too passe and all over Instagram, we decided to order this chocolate shitting Gudetama. Kidding! But this is new in their menu and the sound of shitty chocolate doesn’t sound quite right but I guess the cute Gudetama does make up for it. I find the skin a little too thick for my liking but still it’s pretty cute.
Gudetama cheese custard tarts Hkd39 = S$7.25
Our favourite has to be the Gudetama cheese custard tarts, very delicious and approved by all 5 of us! The crust is soft and flaky but the creamy cheese is to die for! Oozing with every bite! We also ordered the Gudetama custard tarts Hkd39 = S$7.25 and they pale in comparion.
Gudetama milk pudding Hkd39 = S$7.25
So very cute and rather tasty too. We couldn’t bear to smash that yolk face and ended eating around it. haha
Gudetama egg pudding Hkd39 = S$7.25
I prefer this egg pudding than the milk pudding for the milk taste was a little too strong for me.
We got more and more excited as more Gudetama dishes gathered around the table. Everyone was staring at our table and some people actually came to us asking if they can snap our dishes too. I think we went a little Gudetama-overboard!
Gudetama egg yolk buns Hkd49 = S$9.10
Because this particular dish has been vomiting its way on Instagram, we had to order it too. The liu-sha is thick and creamy and we are amazed by how delicious it is. Mama, I’m sorry for I had so much fun playing with my food this time round.
I had a very bad experience at Hello Kitty Cafe Taiwan and was a little skeptical about dining in cute themed cafes but Gudetama at Dim Sum Icon proved me wrong. Food is not only delicious but super cute as well. Perfect way to cheer up one’s day especially when you are eating something this cute!
