Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay has officially accepted a challenge from a group of local food bloggers fully supported by SingTel to see if Singapore’s hawker food can match up to the standards of the prestigious Michelin Guide.
After eight days of intensive voting with over 2.5 million votes, Singapore has chosen Mr Ang from Jumbo Seafood, Mdm Foo from Tian Tian Chicken Rice and Mr Koh from 328 Katong Laksa as their most popular hawkers to challenge Gordon Ramsay at the SingTel Hawker Heroes Challenge!
I am really excited to see Gordon Ramsay for I have been catching him on Hell’s Kitchen, Masterchef and Gordon’s Great Escape! Known for his infamous fiery temper, I was kinda hoping I’ll get to witness a thing or two but nope, I have not heard an angry word nor seen an angry face from the man himself!
The queue for the Hawker Heroes was insane as people were crowding everywhere in hope to catch a glimpse of Chef Ramsay. And I thought the queue for Hello Kitty was crazy. Seetoh from Makansutra was interviewing our local deejays, Glenn Ong, Jean Danker, Peifen, The Muttons and everyone is excited to try the dishes by both our local hawker heroes and Gordon Ramsay himself!
I am so glad to know the gorgeous Jean Danker still remembers me. We used to meet every month at work and it was really nice seeing her again. It’s been tooooo long Jean! =]
Some fans were queueing as early as 1am before the actual event! Amazing determination! Kudos!! The food was finally served and I was beginning to feel excited. Look at the spread? The ones above are from our local hawker heroes and ones below are cooked by Gordon Ramsey!
A lot of us agreed that Gordon Ramsey’s chilli crab is a lot more delicious than the one from Jumbo Seafood Restaurant. Tian Tian Chicken Rice is very delicious but the chilli Gordon concocted pale in comparison. The rice however is moist and the chicken meat soft. Some of us preferred Gordon’s laksa while some preferred 328 Katong Laksa.
Chicken Rice: Mdm Foo’s Tian Tian Chicken Rice
Chilli Crab: Gordon Ramsay
Laksa: Mr Koh from 328 Katong Laksa
It isn’t easy learning our local delicacies in just 48 hours and even though the Michelin chef lost, he has been more than a good sport!
What kinda surprised me most was seeing how friendly and eager Gordon Ramsay was to meet his fans. He stopped to pose for pictures, shaking hands with them and was happily autographing away!
Congratulations to Mdm Foo of Tian Tian Chicken Rice and Mr Koh of 328 Katong Laksa for doing Singapore proud and thank you Chef Ramsey for being such a good sport. I am really happy to be able to have the chance to taste his cooking.
