I was watching street food around the world – Seoul on Nat Geo channel and was inspired to draft this blog post. I am lazy in uploading my travelling pictures on FB since I started blogging yet I love snapping them for memories and for Instagram! Just as I was thinking what will I do with all the food pictures and the yummy street food I’ve eaten in Seoul?? Nat Geo saved me! What to eat when in Seoul? All the street food you HAVE TO try, eaten and tasted! Eating in Korea is convenient and the street food is Seoul yummy! hahaa I was in Seoul, Korea last year October for Seoul Fashion Week and spent 10 days eating my way through the street and restaurants.
When taking Korean Air, you HAVE to try their award winning Bibimbap dish which is a signature Korean dish. There is an instruction menu given to you on how to blend the dishes together. It’s interesting and not too spicy even for a non-chilli eating me!
Kimbap is a popular Korean dish made from steamed white rice and various other ingredients, rolled in sheets of dried seaweed and served in bite-size slices. Often found in street stalls served as light lunch or snack.
Another popular street dish is the skewered fish cake boiled in thin broth radish and kelp. Best eaten with soy sauce dressing.
I don’t know what they call this but it is one of my favourite snack combining both my favourites; French fries and hotdog! Eat it on its own or with ketchup, yummylicious! Choose from deep fry hotdog or have it your way and try the fries with hotdog!
Try cold kimchi soup, its kinda nice and pretty interesting for I guess we are mostly used to drink hot soup instead of the cold ones.
Korean loves meat and veggies just like me sans veggies. Haha I don’t know the exact name to this dish but I am loving and enjoying the cold pork meat! I am usually afraid of the strong pork taste but this one is really good and very delicious! The sauce is sweet and non spicy.
You can easily find tents and “stalls” along the streets of Korea selling their popular Korean street food. Most popular and known Korean street food is the Tteokbokki; spicy rice cake! It is very spicy yet addictive. I love this but the mister isn’t such a fan.
I don’t usually take spicy food but how can one not eat kimchi in Korea? I brave through this bowl of delicious and very spicy Kimchi Ramen! I was in Korea in October and when the weather hits 15 degree with strong cold wind, one would really enjoy this hot spicy noodle!
Barbecue is Korea’s best-known dish! Meat is very expensive in Korea and the carnivorous me has to curb a little and share the pork and beef around. LOL order some soju to go along but my favourite has to be Makgeolli (I’ll talk about it later). We ordered a pot of army stew to go along. The army stew is a spicy stew composed of Korean ramen, Spam, hotdogs, tteokbokki and other toppings. Me loves but I can only eat in moderation for its too spicy for me.
We went to a different restaurant and had a different kind of army stew but it’s equally spicy! Burnt me lips but didn’t stop me from eating. haha
I was excited to see the traditional sitting area for it is what is usually seen in Korean dramas. We had to try this for ourselves!
When you order a dish, it is usually served along with many side dishes; kimchi, bean sprouts, radish etc Different restaurant served different side dishes but you will see a few similar ones. They are served as appetizers and are very tasty.
I am no fan of this dish but when in Korea, you HAVE to try once at least, for it is different from the usual Gingseng Chicken Soup we had. It is presented in a whole young chicken stuffed with glutinous rice and boiled in a broth of Korean ginseng. Very filling!
Yummy Korean Pancake! Not spicy but very chewy and addictive. The ah-jumas (aunties) were urging me to eat it with green chilli and assure me with their cute hand signs that it isn’t spicy. I ain’t falling for it! hahaa
Chinese Spicy Tofu Bibimbap isn’t as spicy as the name suggested. I don’t usually eat veggies but it sure adds some crunch to the rice and tofu. Mixed the tofu into the rice and veggies and you are good to go eat!
So many must try dishes when in Korea… presenting the Abalone Porridge! The porridge is cooked to perfection. No wonder this dish was often presented as a gift to the king of Korea.
Kimchi is Korea’s national dish and there are hundreds of varieties. Often seen in Korean drama is the Kimchi fried rice, so of course I had to try!
Makkoli soup also known as clam soup. Me likey!
The one thing I love doing is trying the fast food restaurants when I’m travelling! This is because different fast food restaurants in different countries have different specialty burgers or items! In Korea they have the Mcdonalds bulgogi burger (pork meat)!
If you are a fan of Tteokbokki like myself then you will be happy to know they serve Tteokbokki at School Food, the fusion way! In all your favourite sauces and cooking style and I mean in a wide variety. I love having my Carbonara pasta so I had to try it Tteokbokki style! Looks are deceiving and it may not look appetising here but its super duper delicious! We also ordered Pork Cutlet with Cheese Street Tteokbokki but OMG, its soooooooooo spicy we couldn’t even finish or take more bites. It’s a pity they didn’t state the level of spicy-ness in the menu.
We venture around and saw this place is packed so being the typical Singaporean, we reckon it must be good so we went in and got ourselves a table! Every table has this huge stone pan and so we pointed and ordered one too! LOL we couldn’t quite figure out what it was cos everything was so red (spicy as usual) until we have gotten our share. Octopus mixed with onions and pan fried with spicy red chilli pepper paste! The marinated grilled beef is very tasty!
You HAVE TO go to Gwangjang Traditional Market to get a feel of the traditional market where you can try their local dishes and local shopping! But the biggest attraction at Gwangjang Traditional Market is its delicious pancakes! They are thick pancakes cooked with meat and vegetables. Order my favourite makgeolli rice wine for the win!
Located along the sidewalks outside Dongdaemun am/pm shopping mall is this hidden treasure! Peanut buttered roast squid! So very delicious!!!
This is fried fish paste with hotdog rolled in between. It is topped with mustard and ketchup. What is fascinating is after finishing it, you will see that the stick holding on to it is infact a wooden chopstick and you can use it to eat Tteokbokki or side dishes!
Another street food you HAVE to try at the night market across Dongdaemun am/pm shopping mall is the grilled octopus! They look nothing fanciful and pale white in colour BUT infact is superbly delicious and addictive! I don’t know what the seasoning was but it got us wanting more! Many people were waiting in the cold just to buy it!
I LOVE this Egg Bread but I don’t see this street food as often as the rest. It’s sweetened dough that is topped with an egg.
The other most known and popular dish you have to try would be Jajangmyeon aka Ja jang mian! This noodle is mixed in thick black salty soybean paste along with diced pork and vegetables.
Being a carnivorous, I love this meat platter known as Tangsuyuk; sweet and sour crispy pork and chicken! So very yummy lah!
You tell me how not to put on weight after spending 10 days in Seoul? Seoul yummy and Seoul fun lah! I will be more hardworking and compile what to eat in Bangkok and Penang ok? heheee
