The award-winning smash hit Broadway musical spectacular, Beauty and the Beast is coming to Singapore for the first time as part of their 20th anniversary celebrations with a first-ever international tour. This elaborate theatrical production will come to life on stage at the MasterCard Theatres, Marina Bay Sands from 21 March 2015 for a limited season. Tickets are now on sale.
Based on the 1991 Academy-Award winning animated feature film, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast premiered on Broadway in 1994, where it was nominated for nine prestigious Tony Awards and ran for 13 years. It still ranks as one of the longest-running and highest-grossing Broadway shows of all time.
The musical is directed by Rob Roth and choreographed by Matt West, with Costume Design by Ann Hould-Ward (Tony Award® winner for her work on Disney’s Beauty and the Beast), Lighting Design by Natasha Katz, Scenic Design by Stanley A. Meyer, Sound Design by John Petrafesa Jr. and Music Supervision by Michael Kosarin.
If it has been too long since you last watched this Disney fairy tale play out in front of you, here’s a quick synopsis of the story:
Disney’s Beauty and the Beast is the classic story of Belle, a young woman in a provincial town, and the Beast, who is really a young prince trapped in a spell placed by an enchantress. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the curse will end and he will be transformed to his former self. But time is running out. If the Beast does not learn his lesson soon, he and his household will be doomed for all eternity.
Hilary Maiberger acts as Belle and Darick Pead acts as Beast in this musical. What makes them the perfect fit for their roles is that they understand the journey their characters go through. Hilary shares that she shares the same personalities as Belle, in the sense that she is a typically shy girl but when it comes to singing, she can sing in front of anyone. It is all about this awkward, young girl trying to find her place in the world and she grows up to become this amazing, confident person. For the Beast, his role is one that is unloved and alone and it is something we all have felt at one point in our lives, a feeling we can empthasize with.
